Posada’s use of bright colors — particularly red, which symbolizes love for deceased family members and friends — helped the image of La Calavera Catrina become synonymous with Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The celebration, which takes place over several days and honors ancestors who have passed on, is entirely separate from Halloween.
